Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa: A Hollywood Legacy Ends in Tragedy

Gene Hackman, a legendary actor known for roles in The French Connection, Unforgiven, and Superman, was one of Hollywood’s most respected performers. The two-time Academy Award winner retired from acting in 2004, spending his later years in New Mexico with his wife, Betsy Arakawa, a former pianist and businesswoman. Their deaths, which occurred in succession—with Arakawa passing on February 11 and Hackman following around February 18—have left many fans in mourning.

The dog, which was discovered dead inside their home, underwent a necropsy performed by a veterinary pathologist. The examination found:

• No signs of trauma, disease, cancer, or toxic exposure

• Severe decomposition, making underlying conditions difficult to detect

• Signs pointing to dehydration and starvation as the most likely causes

Investigators also noted clotted blood and oral ulcers in the dog’s mouth, which may have been caused by chewing on a hard object or the effects of severe dehydration.

The Dog’s Surgical History

The report revealed that the dog had undergone multiple surgeries, including:

  • Spleen removal – A common procedure in dogs treated for tumors or other masses
  • Gastropexy – A surgery that prevents gastric dilatation volvulus (GDV), a life-threatening condition in dogs
  • Small intestine surgery – Multiple incisions were found, though their purpose remains unclear due to advanced decomposition

Surviving Dogs Played a Key Role in Investigation

The deceased dog was one of three found on Hackman and Arakawa’s property. The other two were discovered alive and healthy. Investigators credited one of these surviving dogs with helping to locate Gene Hackman’s body, as it barked and led officials to the mudroom, where Hackman was found.

While authorities have determined Hackman and Arakawa’s causes of death, the dog’s passing raises further questions about what happened inside their home in the days leading up to their discovery. The famous actor’s death marks the end of an era, but the mystery surrounding his final moments continues to unfold.
