In a heartwarming tale of persistence and hope, Lalana, a 13-year-old cat, has been reunited with her family in Guernsey after spending six years missing from her home.
The cat originally lived with the Cozens family on a farm, where she enjoyed roaming freely. In 2019, after the family moved to Vale, Lalana became frightened and escaped. Her disappearance initially seemed like a temporary setback, but weeks turned into months, and eventually years.
Hayden Cozens, Lalana’s owner, had long since given up hope of finding her, believing she was lost forever. The family was stunned when animal volunteer Sue Vidamour discovered Lalana living in a hedge near the Puffin and Oyster at Grand Havre.
“It’s a heck of a distance,” Cozens remarked. “I do not know what she’s been doing really. I do not think she’s had much human contact for the last few years.”
Vidamour traced Lalana through her microchip, which was still linked to the family’s old address in Castel. The cat had apparently been surviving by eating food from other cats in the area until she was finally trapped and rescued.
Now back home, Lalana is being kept indoors for eight weeks to help her recover and readjust. Her owner hopes she will finally settle down and remain with the family.
“Hopefully she’ll decide that she wants to stick around,” Cozens said, expressing his joy at the unexpected reunion.
